DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Iowa Department of Transportation is reporting that gusty northwest winds are continuing to hamper travel, causing blowing and drifting snow.

Light snow also continues across much of the eastern half of the state, but has diminished to occasional snow showers and flurries in the west. Roadways statewide remain covered with a coating of ice or a mix of ice and snow.

The Iowa DOT’s road weather information system is currently reporting wind gusts in excess of 30 mph in Ames, Avoca, Creston, Jefferson, Sidney, and Storm Lake. Drifting and occasional periods of limited visibility can be expected in these areas of the state, especially in open areas.

The DOT reported that motorists are driving too fast for conditions and not putting sufficient space between their vehicle and those ahead. The Iowa DOT is urging travelers to make necessary adjustments, like reducing their vehicle speeds, turning off the cruise control and giving their full attention to the driving task.

Forecast

A winter storm warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for north central and most of eastern Iowa. Brisk northwest winds throughout the day will cause significant blowing and drifting of snow.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. this evening for areas generally west of Interstate 35. Visibility will diminish significantly as winds increase due to widespread blowing snow, especially in rural and open areas.

DOT Travel Tips

Avoid travel whenever possible.

Reduce speeds to accommodate for lack of control or visibility.

Increase following distance to 8-10 seconds between cars.

Remember, 4 wheel drive doesn’t help you on slick roads.

Never use cruise control.

Be particularly careful of bridges and overpasses where ice accumulates more quickly.

Heed all travel warnings. Never drive on closed roads.

Call 9-1-1 if you are involved in an accident or put your car in the ditch.

Never leave your vehicle after an accident. Wait for assistance to come to you.
